This captivating Japanese maple offers year-round interest with its striking seasonal transformations. Acer palmatum 'Beni-kawa', a close relative of the popular 'Sango Kaku', distinguishes itself by growing slightly taller. Its 5-lobed leaves unfurl in a delicate pinkish-yellow hue, transitioning to bright green in summer before erupting into vibrant bronzed oranges and yellows in autumn. Small reddish-purple flowers in spring give way to winged fruits later in the year. However, the tree's true showstopper is its brilliant coral-red stems, most dramatic when winter sunshine illuminates the bare branches. How to care for Acer palmatum Beni-kawa:
Add a top-dressing of a well-balanced fertiliser around the base of a newly planted tree in late spring and keep well watered. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.
