This album tells the story of exile—both political and artistic—honoring composers and performers forced to leave their homelands due to oppression or economic hardship. In paying tribute to them, violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, herself shaped by a life of displacement from Soviet Moldova to Switzerland and Austria, curates a deeply personal program where exile is the unifying theme rather than stylistic cohesion. Director and solo violinist of the Camerata Bern, Kopatchinskaja presents Cello Sonata No. 1 by Alfred Schnittke, performed here in a unique arrangement for solo cello, strings, and harpsichord by Martin Merker. Thomas Kaufmann’s cello performance is framed by Ukrainian and Moldovan folk pieces, a nod to Schnittke’s late-life emigration from the Soviet Union to Hamburg in pursuit of artistic freedom.

The program also features composer Andrzej Panufnik who left Poland in 1954 in protest against the government and never returned to his homeland. His Violin Concerto for Violin and Strings was commissioned by Yehudi Menuhin, who premiered it in London. Ivan Wyschnegradsky, meanwhile, fled the new Soviet regime at the age of 27, settling in Paris, where he eventually became a French citizen. His political exile was mirrored by an artistic one, as he pursued radical innovations, including the use of quarter tones in his String Quartet No. 2 (1931). With Schubert, we encounter not so much a figure of exile but rather the perpetual traveler—the Wanderer of German Romanticism—with a few brief pieces specially arranged by Patricia Kopatchinskaja. This highly original program concludes with Exil!, a heartfelt cry from violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, longing for his Belgian homeland after settling in the United States during World War I. © François Hudry/Qobuz
