Although William Christie could be young star Julien Taylor’s grandfather, the two harpsichordists find themselves on a level playing field for their first album as a duo. Along with their North American origins, they also share the same passion for the composer-harpsichordists of the Grand Siècle, the period of French history under the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. This very French “conversation,” like the “twittering” Germaine de Staël described to resound in the French salons of her time, is dedicated to Gaspard Le Roux, a composer from the end of Louis XIV’s reign. Musicologists often stress Le Roux’s importance, but we ultimately know little about this composer who left us with pieces that are as singular as they are refined and brilliant. This symphonic music is complex, ambitious, harmonically rich, and completely antithetical to the more intimate and delicate works of artists like François Couperin.
Le Roux’s suites for harpsichord can be played by one or two instruments, so the two performers have thus sought to attune their temperaments in order to achieve the perfect sonoric alchemy. William Christie had actually already recorded these same suites alongside harpsichordist Arthur Haas almost fifty years ago. This new recording allows him to take a step back and appreciate the journey he’s embarked upon since then. He notes that the current generation, whose playing has become simpler and more spontaneous, seems to have perfectly comprehended the way in which the baroque esthetic is so intimately linked with syntax, declamation, and song.
