Christian Escoudé, who passed away on May 13, 2024, at the age of 76, will always be remembered as one of the greatest torchbearers of Django Reinhardt’s European jazz legacy. Few musicians were as skilled at pushing beyond the foundations of the Manouche tradition, embracing modernity through fearless collaborations with the finest artists in French and later American jazz—from Eddy Louiss and Michel Portal to Charlie Haden. This carefully curated collection of reissues offers a perfect snapshot of his work, bringing together three key albums from his early years as a bandleader: Les Quatre Éléments (1976) and Gousti (1979), both recorded in duo with cellist Jean-Charles Capon, and Libra (1976), a stunning collaboration with pianist Michel Graillier.
Of the three, Libra stands out as a true masterpiece, with Escoudé and Graillier in perfect sync, unfolding melodies and harmonies that remain fresh and full of poetic spontaneity even fifty years later. But the entire collection is exceptional! In a more chamber-like and lyrical style, Jean-Charles Capon—one of the first musicians to free the cello for improvisation—provides a sophisticated, endlessly inventive counterpoint to Escoudé’s expressive lyrical genius.
