This audacious album equates to four CDs, and it’s the perfect way to discover the work of French composer-flautist Eugène Walckiers (1793-1866), a unique character who was eccentric both in personality and appearance. He left behind a wide-ranging catalogue for his favourite instrument through which he combined theatrical and lyrical elements with humour and wit.
Flautist Alexis Kossenko soon became captivated by this body of work. An enthusiastic and multi-faceted musician, he threw himself wholeheartedly into this exploration of an unjustly forgotten composer—and the result won’t leave anyone indifferent. Walckiers’ music borrows sounds from his time, drawing inspiration from Rossini, Reicha, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Offenbach, Onslow and Berlioz with great sensitivity and a variety of instrumental formulas. Kossenko’s initial project gradually transformed into an extensive work that presents four sides of this radical composer: the theatrical, the picturesque, the poetic and the virtuosic—elements which are ultimately found in each and every piece debuted here.
These pieces are generally very elaborate and dominated by the standard Western concert flute (Alexis Kossenko plays six different models depending on the style and the period). They take the form of quintets, quartets, sonatas for flute and piano, wind trios or quartets, amongst other entertaining pieces thrown in. Accompanied by a dozen musicians, it’s clear to see that Alexis Kossenko is having fun with these pieces.
