The design of this lens is all about providing flexible and enjoyable user experience. The compact and lightweight Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 Contemporary DG DN OS Lens is full of features that allow the use of this lens in a range of situations. At a glance, the telephoto lens is also capable of 1:3.8 ratio macro photography with a minimum focal distance of just 160cm. It features a push/pull zoom in addition to twist zoom ring, an HSM for quick and quiet AF and optical stabiliser that helps reduce camera shake. Sigma has also included several glass elements and coatings that will lessen colour fringing, chromatic aberrations, lens flare and ghosting.
It's a common feature on Sigma lenses that glass treatment will help you capture some beautiful imagery. This lens designed to feature stunning optical quality throughout the entire 100-400mm focal range. The large focal length is accompanied by several glass elements and coatings; it's constructed from 21 lens elements in 15 groups, including four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements that help to reduce colour fringing and chromatic aberrations which in turn increase clarity and colour accuracy. Also, Sigma has applied a super-multi-layer coating which is designed to minimise lens flare and ghosting. These coatings also contribute to contract-rich, colour-neutral photos, even when you find yourself in backlit conditions.
To accompany the beautiful optics of this lens, Sigma two features that enable smooth, fast and shake-free operation. First of all, is the addition of an integrated Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) which allows your autofocusing to be quick and quiet; a complimentary feature for a telephoto lens such as this stealth can be key to capturing the best shot. This motor is enhanced with an updated AF algorithm that further smooths focussing, and what's more, the HSM does allow for full-time manual control at any given moment. Sigma also has featured a redeveloped gyroscopic sensor and exclusive algorithm which together, create an all-new optical stabilisation unit. You'll find that held in both a vertical or horizontal position, the acceleration sensor will detect camera shake in any horizontal, vertical, or diagonal direction.
