Die Funksters aus Montreal sind wieder da und nach einem Abstecher zum Pop vor vier Jahren mit White Women kommen sie mit diesem neuen Album wieder in ihr Lager zurück. Zehn Jahre nach der beim Erscheinen von Fancy Footwork ausgelösten Raserei beschließen Pee Thugg und Dave 1 (der kleine Bruder des Elektroproduzenten Tiga), dem Veteranen des Funk die Ehre zu erweisen. Und schon beim ersten Titel, Must’ve Been, taucht man in die Atmosphäre von Kool and the Gang ein. Mit der Teilnahme des Rappers DRAM (ihm ist der Superhit Broccoli zu verdanken) und der Gitarre von Jesse Johnson, der mit Prince und The Time (der Gruppe rund um Kid) gespielt hat, geht es wieder in eine modernere Richtung. Diese Art von Einfluss ist auf dem gesamten Album zu finden, etwa in Don’t Sleep, einem guten, alten kalifornischen Funk mit elektronischen Klängen wie bei Lakeside oder Count Me, der den Sound von Minneapolis übernimmt.
Chromeo haben ihre Gästeliste verlängert, mit dem amerikanisch-marokkanischen Sänger French Montana, der Rapperin Stefflon Don und der Soulsister Amber Mark. Im Studio konnten sie auf das ehemalige Tony! Toni! Toné!-Mitglied Raphael Saadiq und den R&B-Giganten Rodney Jerkins zählen (den Mann, der hinter den Hits von Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez oder Beyoncés und Jay-Z’s Déjà Vu steht), aber auch auf Pino Palladino, der mit D’Angelo zusammenarbeitet. Ein Line-Up, das für diesen Beitrag zum amerikanischen Funk höchste Produktionsqualität garantiert, auch wenn Chromeo über die begrenzte Handlungsfähigkeit Bescheid wissen: „Es interessiert uns nicht, dasselbe zu singen wie die Leute in den achtziger Jahren.
