An explanation of what Rathlin from a Distance/The Liquid Hour is may go a long way in describing what it sounds like. Arriving 30 years into composer/songwriter Yann Tiersen's stylistically eclectic recording career, the over-80-minute, two-part work was inspired by a months-long sailboat tour in 2023, during which the French Breton musician both sat with his thoughts and engaged with other parts of the world. The resulting Rathlin from a Distance section consists of eight reflective solo piano pieces, whereas The Liquid Hour is a more confrontational set of dance-oriented post-rock recorded on vintage and electronic instruments and meant to express the need for social and political change. The latter section of the album includes the use of four different drum machines, occasional vocals by Émilie Quinquis, and access to a rare Ondioline, a forerunner of the synthesizer (prototype 1939) on loan from Gotye’s Forgotten Futures non-profit, among many other components. First, though, with tracks named for locations along Tiersen's voyage, Rathlin from a Distance begins with the melancholy and relatively simple "Ninnog" before easing into the more dissonant "Fastnet," a funereal title track, and later pieces including the more roiling and animated "Norðragøta," this first section's longest entry at nearly seven minutes. The run times get longer on The Liquid Hour, which starts off with "Stourm," a title befitting an episodic, over-11-minute piece that passes through slow-shifting, overlapping blends -- like gentle waves -- of electronics and strings, then into glitchier yet more melodic material, with percolating, beat-driven kosmische segments ending the track. This part of the album also includes the more urgent and metallic, five-minute "Arne" and a longer, more whimsical title track that features timbres ranging from flex-a-tone and space laser to harpsichord. The Liquid Hour closes on a relatively triumphant note with the celebratory "Dolores," whose last note is the chime of a tubular bell (followed by studio clatter). Taken together, Rathlin from a Distance/The Liquid Hour is comforting, inventive, and affecting -- sometimes alternately and sometimes all at once -- and feels strangely personal considering its multifaceted approach.
