Max Richter ushers in a new era with his ninth album, the first composed in the new studio he opened with his partner Yulia Mahr; an eco-friendly, minimalist "art farm" in the Oxfordshire countryside. In A Landscape echoes his second album, The Blue Notebooks, which launched his career in 2004—a “meditation on violence” inspired by the Gulf War. Here too, the focus is on introspection and emotional release. “It’s me looking around, trying to examine where I am, like a memoir of the present moment,” he says.
With this album featuring numerous small suites and interludes constructed from his usual tools—piano, Hammond organ, and MiniMoog, you can sense Richter "testing" this new studio, which he describes as "an instrument in itself." He also invites a string quintet on a few tracks, consisting of Eloisa-Fleur Thom and Max Baillie on violin, Connie Pharaoh on viola, and Max Ruisi and Zara Hudson-Kozdoj on cello. The result is sublime right out the gate, with "They Will Shade Us With Their Wings," full of elegance, tranquillity and incredibly soothing strings. Fans of Max Richter's film score compositions will be pleased with "And Some Will Fall," which will likely appear in a film or series soon. There are also some more electronic pieces, like "Only Silent Words." Ultimately, Richter offers a beautiful glimpse of the possibilities this new studio can bring—leaving us eager to hear what will come out of it next. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
