The British band London Grammar is back with a fourth album. The group has been delivering hit after hit for over a decade, and this album’s dreamy lead single works as a calling card for them to reintroduce their bestselling talent. "House" stands out with its drum'n'bass influence and divulges into the singer Hannah Reid’s serene mindset as she enters her thirties. Of course, it’s far from being the only track on the album to leave you with an ethereal feeling. With its layers and transcendent choir (the Rhythm Studio Choir), a track like "You And I" ticks all the boxes, as does "Into Gold," with a few piano notes scattered in and eerie, repetitive vocal effects. The eponymous "The Greatest Love" gently comforts the listener and carries them through a soothing melody and lilting three-beat rhythm. But London Grammar's dreamy sound should certainly not be seen as an aversion to sharpness. Tackling a more negative subject, "Fakest Bitch" surprises the listener with its stinging undertones.
The album also features more upbeat tracks like "Rescue" (with its almost cheerful onomatopoeic chorus), and of course the two one way tickets to “LA” and “Santa Fe”. The emotional intensity that London Grammar is reputed for reaches its peak in these latter two tracks, thanks to sophisticated lyricism and beautiful, catchy melodies, supported by smooth production (and not to mention Hannah Reid's captivating voice). And so, with "The Greatest Love," Hannah Reid once again proves her mastery over the grammar of songwriting. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
