To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bitches Brew (Miles Davis’ legendary album released in April 1970), Swedish producer Martin Terefe had planned an ambitious 2020 concert featuring the crème de la crème of London’s jazz scene. However, the Covid pandemic and ensuing lockdown ultimately prevented the event from taking place. Undeterred, the musicians decided to get together to pay homage to this ground-breaking jazz fusion record in this way instead. With the help of Dave Okumu from The Invisible and DJ Benji B, Terefe left the cast a few instructions and ideas to consider, giving them plenty of wiggle room to express themselves instead. This is undoubtedly an incredible cast. London Brew brings together Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Theon Cross, Tom Skinner, Raven Bush, Tom Herbert, Nikolaj Torp Larsen, Nick Ramm and Dan See. Though the guidelines might be vague, the album follows in the footsteps of Bitches Brew. Loops, effects, a myriad of medleys… Miles and his producer, Teo Macero, spent days tinkering with this whirling record. Half a century later, London Brew still has that same stormy feel about it, but the winds are a different colour this time. Its 94 minutes of music pay tribute to the philosophy behind Bitches Brew, not to each individual track on the original record. Just listen to Miles Chases New Voodoo in the Church, which puts a whole new spin on Miles Runs the Voodoo Down (and features Nubya Garcia’s stunning saxophone complete with effect pedals). Recording for London Brew lasted three days, leaving Martin Terefe with 12 hours’ worth of music. He didn’t simply copy and paste like Miles and Macero, but opted instead to preserve the original spark of the music that’s inspired as much by jazz, fusion and rock as it is by Caribbean and electronic music. A lively celebration of unity, sharing and collective creativity, this release could be subtitled Inspired by Bitches Brew—the London Brew group couldn’t have commemorated this anniversary in any better way. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
