Producer, DJ, and encyclopaedic audiophile Fabrice Henri—aka Guts—achieves more than he bargained for with his album Estrellas. Alongside his French team in Dakar, Guts gathered Senegalese and Cuban musicians from all generations to weave together the musical threads that have long made the countries dance to the same crazy rhythms (salsa was the most popular music in Senegal right up until the 1970s!) The pinnacle of the album is the second track ‘Ultima Llamada’, which unites the musicians in a rapturous, spiritual jazz composition predestined for loud and frequent listening. The late Senegalese flautist Ousmane Ba shines here, exuding wonderful emotion. With the chakras now open, anything is possible. The album is long and plentiful, swaying between wild salsas and hip-hop flow whilst peppering in a little heady and funky soul. With Estrellas, Guts manages to meld together his passions for black music from both Africa and America. It’s an impressive collective work which allows each musician to showcase their talents. Whether it’s the piano, percussion, brass, guitar or vocals, everything is bursting with virtuosity, accuracy and elegance. Guts is at the magical helm of this magnificent transatlantic orchestra, where he displays his enchanting sound wizardry and his incredible talents as a producer.
