Flashing the pipes of a committed gospel raver, Canadian-born, New Zealand-based Tami Neilson is a leading voice in the growing subgenre of country soul singers. From the dramatic wash of strings backing the opening track, "Foolish Heart," it's clear that big-voiced Neilson and producer Steven Schram had Roy Orbison's grand productions in mind for Neon Cowgirl. That leads to the grizzled guitars of the low-down rocker "Salvation Mountain," on which Neilson sings in her lower register, giving her soul shouter persona full reign. The singer/songwriter also throws herself into her sweeping title track ballad where acoustic piano, strings, and harmonies by Neil Finn all add to her dramatic turn towards a towering pop single. Neilson turns on her soul shine in "Borrow my Boots," where her powerful voice is given extra dimension and richness through the backing vocals of Grace Bowers, Shelly Fairchild and Ashley McBryde. In "Love Someone" she growls out a plea for tolerance, "Some folks strut with their ears locked shut/ Shootin' off their mouth like a gun/ Shakin' their finger, calling everyone a sinner/ Don't do things like they like 'em done." Neilson is joined by JD McPerson on the Spaghetti Western-vibed, "You're Gonna Fall" and the two channel Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra as spooky background vocals rise and fall. The album's strongest moment is "Loneliness of Love," a co-write with her brother Jay Neilson;it speaks of a woman left alone by her dead husband and grown children: "In the housecoat that she's always worn/ At the kitchen table in the dark/ Plays the old machine to hear him talk/ He says to leave a message at the tone/ 'Cause the two of them ain't home." The Orbison energy returns in album closer "One Less Heart," where Neilson reveals crushing emotional lows against a rising, intense melody, "I'm one less heart for you to break/ I'm one less kiss for you to take/ You're one less tear for me to cry/ So darling now I'll say goodbye." © Robert Baird/Qobuz
