Housed by !K7, the German label behind the famous compilation series DJ Kicks, Niklas Paschburg drew inspiration from the shores of the Baltic Sea for his first album Oceanic in 2018. This time, he hid himself away on the Norwegian island of Svalbard, the place where humanity is building a conservational database of all existing types of grains and seeds in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Although he was quickly absorbed into the neo-classical category (“I love Nils Frahm’s music and I am so grateful to him and Max Richter for paving the way, but I also try and show that I can exist as myself”), he seems instead to belong to the ‘scene’ of globe-trotting musicians, like Molécule who went off to Greenland to sample some icebergs or Soundwalk Collective who spent two months composing on a sailing boat on the Black Sea.
The German artist, who has played the piano since he was 5 and has trained in classical but also jazz music, has created a glacial but radiant album as if he wanted to push the far Northern latitudes down south. Case in point: If, carried by a celestial piano and a stifled rimshot beat, or Cyan, written in the aftermath of a blizzard. The record was almost entirely composed in Svalbard, but parts were written upon Paschburg’s return, like Duvet which was penned during the summer in Brighton alongside Andy Barlow from trailblazing trip hop group Lamb. Duvet is a more intimate track, and features a bee that seemed attracted to the microphone and which Niklas Paschburg decided to leave on the final cut. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
