Depicted as a modern-day saint on the cover of his third album, Rag’n’Bone Man highlights the spiritual themes woven into his new songs. A year and a half after the death of his mother, he’s questioned the idea of faith a great deal: “I’m not religious, but it made me want to believe in something, so I can tell my kids that their grandmother is in a better place,” he explains. In the album What Do You Believe In?, he surrenders himself to his own gods, that is, those of soul and R’n’B. From the album’s very first notes, the groove and the sitar remind us of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours),” sending us straight back to a ‘70’s soul sound (“The Right Way”), but through a hip-hop lens. And where there’s faith, there’s gospel: with its brassy intro, enchanting harp, and muted trumpet, a track like “Hideaway” doesn’t try to hide its gospel influence. He brings a unique touch to the genre in tracks like “Put a Little Hurt on Me” and even more so on the striking track “Iron.” In this album largely dedicated to Love with a capital “L,” Rag’n’Bone Man sometimes ventures beyond his influences, as in the electro-tinged “All I Know“.
