A staple within the history of Jazz, the minimalist piano/bass duet is as essential as it is precarious. It requires both artists to refrain from egotistically showcasing their individual skills and prioritise using their instrumental mastery in respectful tandem. Whilst double bassist Stéphane Kerecki has already shown his aptitude in this regard, recording an authentic masterpiece (Patience) with John Taylor, this is a first for pianist Thomas Enhco, despite his broad experience across numerous styles and registers. The two come together on A Modern Soundbook, a subtle collection of masterfully reinvented popular songs which cover a wide range of styles and genres. The two musicians emancipate themselves from the traditional repertoire without leaving an on the nose jazz-based imprint on the theme and improvisation. They revisit here, with great sensitivity and musicality, a surprisingly diverse set of excerpts from classical pieces (Schumann, Fauré), traditional tunes (Danny Boy), soul (Aretha Franklin), pop (Sting, London Grammar, Nick Drake) and International music (Silvio Rodriguez, Rami Khalifé). The duo extracts the melodic marrow and magnifies the harmonic palette with confidence and contemplation. By favouring slower tempos and sticking close to the originals with a paradoxical mix of humility and great virtuosity, Stéphane Kerecki and Thomas Enhco prove themselves to be some of the greatest musicians in their field. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
