Igor Stravinsky once said, “Art is finding a fresh spot on the pillow.“ After the scorching albums Teatro Lucido and Paris-Hawaï, La Femme heads north. This time, 1980s new wave and cold wave is under the spotlight. And for the first time, the tracks are entirely written in English. “We’ve also brought back our rock’n’roll side,“ adds Marlon Magnée, co-founder of La Femme alongside Sacha Got. And since nothing is ever one-dimensional with this exceptional band, we also get some surf music in “Ciao Paris!“ that even Maurice Chevalier himself would have appreciated, along with a nod to classic western soundtracks in “Goodbye Tonight“.

With La Femme, paying homage is always multi-layered. They’re often teetering on the edge of pastiche. This is the case with “Love Is Over,“ a sort of natural child of Giorgio Moroder in its basslines, borrowing from the Pet Shop Boys the melody and vocals. “I Gonna Make a Hit“ takes that playful approach even further, while “I Believe in Rock and Roll“ leaves us wondering whether it’s a tribute to Pink Floyd or Monty Python. The press releases describe Rock Machine as “an ode to rock’n’roll.“ But the album could easily be seen as rock-and-roll reimagined with a hefty dose of irony. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
