Created in 2021 following the bombshell union of DJ/producer Gilles Peterson and guitarist and producer Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick (who led the brit funk scene at the turn of the 80s with his band Incognito), the STR4TA project aims to resurrect and update the spirit of this delightfully carefree movement - one which can be seen as the precursor to the vast musical melting pot we know today, through which disco, funk, jazz-fusion and synthetic pop were seamlessly linked, creating a sound which was both hedonistic and sophisticated.
After their first album, Aspects, which laid out the aesthetic foundations of the project by redefining its core elements (humming, bass, funky drums, rebellious synths and perfect arrangements for soulful and sensual voices), the duo is back with a mature and accomplished record. They’ve also invited a myriad of artists from the new generation (Omar, Victoria Port, the Anushka duo, Emma-Jean Thackray and American trumpeter Theo Crocker) to collaborate with them on the album. STR4TA goes beyond simple nostalgia, building bridges between eras and proposing new hybrids with more contemporary sounds, with other ways of articulating funk music’s heritage. The writing and production are ambitious throughout the release, and there’s a strong preference for groove and dance.
