Israeli trumpeter Avishai Cohen, who in a 2020 interview with Jazz Magazine, declared that he considered “Trump and Netanyahu much more worrying and dangerous than the coronavirus,” has never hidden his deeply left-wing political convictions, nor his desire to create music that is “as sincere as possible,” serving as a “counter-model to the manipulation of the masses through fear and widespread lies.” This new album is to be viewed through this lens, recorded in the months following the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. It's a spontaneous, visceral, and deeply emotional response to the horror of the event, and an intimate catharsis for the feelings of desolation and hatred that have inevitably risen and spread within him. Leading his usual quartet, made up of his longtime friends Yonathan Avishai on piano, Barak Mori on double bass, and Ziv Ravitz on drums, Cohen embarks on the long five-part suite that gives the album its title. He translates his reactions into music, navigating challenges across the emotional spectrum—from hope to depression, indignation to profound melancholy. This dramatic music, filled with twilight-tinged lyricism and often despair, sees each deeply committed member of the quartet offer their best varied and extremely sensitive performances. With a masterful final touch to bring the album to a close, Avishai Cohen complements the album’s program with the “Adagio assai“ from Ravel’s famous Piano Concerto in G Major and a magnificent final piece, "The Seventh," composed by his teenage daughter, Amalia. It provides a moment of calm, contrasting with the emotionally intense record with its beautiful melodic simplicity. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
