Is it illegal to ride a bike without lights UK?
The simple answer is that it is illegal to ride a bike in the UK without lights when it is dark. This is normally defined from sunset to sunrise and not a set time. There are rules on what lights you have on your bike during this time frame. You are legally required to have a white light on the front of your bike and a red light on the back of your bike.
Are flashing bike lights legal?
You are allowed to flashing lights in the UK, but there are a certain set of rules that you must follow to ensure your bike lights are legal. Your light must not flash more than 60 and 240 times per minute, or this is so that you do blind other users on the road. Also, you must ensure that the light admits a certain amount of illumination based on your location to be road legal in the UK. Besides, it is important that you mount the bike lights on the bike and not on your person, like your helmet. This is because you can change the direction of the light, causing blind spots. Your bike lights need to be mounted at least 1,500mm from the ground.
How bright should your bike lights be?
How bright your lights need to be so they are road legal depends on a number of factors, like the type of road you are riding on. If you are on a well-lit urban road, your lights need to be between 100 and 200 lumens. If you are on a dark country lane with no other lights, you will need to make sure your lights are over 200 lumens. If you are riding in the daytime or in bad light, you need to make sure your lights are at least 100 lumens.
We value your safety, so make sure you check you have the right light before setting off on your next journey and do your research.
